Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took his family to visit the Taj Mahal in Agra on Sunday, thus kickstarting his visit to the country. Trudeau is to meet with Chief Minister of Punjab Amarinder Singh during the week-long visit and a source familiar with the Canadian side said that “uncertainties prevail” on this. The Canadian leader’s problems with the Punjab Chief Minister stems from the latter’s criticism of alleged pro-Khalistan sentiments of Canadian Defence Minister Harjit Singh Sajjan. Trudeau however, intends to deepen ties as much with New Delhi as with Indians in Canada.

This trip, he said, was focused on creating jobs and strengthening the "deep connection" between the people of the two nations. The Trudeau family is scheduled to even tour the Golden Temple at Amritsar during the week-long visit. Trudeau’s much anticipated trip to India began on Saturday amid uncertainties over his meeting with Chief Minister of Punjab. Earlier, media reports from Canada had indicated that the Chief Minister was expected to accompany Mr. Trudeau during his Amritsar trip, but the programme was not firmed up till Sunday. The visit by Mr. Trudeau was anticipated since 2014 but did not materialise even though other Cabinet colleagues had come here during the last four years. Well, we sure are glad to receive the Prime Minister and wish him a pleasant stay in our country.
