While the makers of 'Raees' have maintained that the film is a fictional story, the son of Ahmedabad based bootlegger, Abdul Latif, Mushtaq Sheikh is convinced otherwise. Mushtaq Sheikh is of belief that the film is based on his father's life, and had slapped the makers with a Rs. 100 crore defamation case last April.

Talking to the leading daily, Mushtaq said, “I have watched the film’s trailer, and what they [makers] say doesn’t matter. It is clearly based on my father’s life. I will wait till the matter is taken up in court again after the film’s release." According to a source, “Mushtaq feels that the depiction is lopsided, ignoring the good Latif did. The family also insists that certain portions insult his mother. Latif ran a successful bootlegging business in the 80s in the Popatiyawad area of Gujarat, and rose to the ranks of don, some say, thanks to his proximity to Dawood Ibrahim.”

Mushtaq wants a stay placed on the release of the film as he believes that while the makers consulted the family, they have not shown any good that was done by Latif in the state. The filmmakers have shown Shah Rukh Khan as a bootlegger in pre-probation Gujarat, who runs a brothel, and uses women to deliver liquor consignments. Talking about the case, Mushtaq's lawyer told the daily, [Latif’s] family was approached by the makers in 2014 to reveal details of his look and work. My client’s family parted with the information with the faith that it wouldn’t be commercialised. But the depiction looks lopsided. He [Latif] has been made to look like a gunda. None of the positive work he did, including winning the elections and helping people, has been highlighted.” Harish added, “The facts have been manipulated to defame Latif. We are waiting to check if the family is credited [for sharing the information]. My client must be compensated for the damage caused to him and his family’s reputation.”

Mushtaq's legal counsel, Ilyas Pathan said, “Another major bone of contention is the depiction of Latif’s wife. No hijab-wearing lady of Daryapuri has ever been caught for being involved in the liquor business. The local Muslim community has taken offence to the inappropriate depiction and intends to file a petition. Haraam ki cheezein dikha rahe ho jo ki sach nahin hai."

While there has been no confirmation from the filmmaker's end, 'Raees' is slated to release on 25th January.
