Veteran actor Anupam Kher has replaced actor Gajendra Chauhan to become the new chief of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. Anupam made his debut with Mahesh Bhatt's movie 'Saaransh' and has since then worked in some really impressive films alongside superstars, leaving a mark with his impressive performance in each movie.

The actor has appeared in more than 500 films and has even been a part of critically acclaimed international films like 'Bend It Like Beckham', Golden Lion-winning 'Lust', and the Oscar Award-winning 'Silver Linings Playbook', among other films. He was awarded the Government of India's prestigious awards, the Padma Shri in 2004 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016, for his contribution in the field of cinema and arts. The actor had previously held the position of chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification and the National School of Drama in India.

His appointment as the chief has come as a welcome change to FTII students who had earlier gone on a strike post the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as the chief of the institute. The students had argued that the move was politically motivated with Gajendra not having the basic qualification to hold the post, which was earlier held by the likes of filmmakers Mahesh Bhatt and Shyam Benegal.
