Former Central Board of Film Certification chief Pahlaj Nihalani was recently removed from the board, much to the joy of Bollywood filmmakers. He is undoubtedly the most controversial CBFC chief of all time and has created more problems for filmmakers than he has solved.

While it is still a mystery as to what exactly led to his ousting from the Board, a report from a leading tabloid says it was filmmaker Ekta Kapoor who used her political influence to get the chief kicked out. "For a very long time, Ekta had been grumbling against Nihalani's high-handedness. As luck would have it, Ekta's old buddy Smriti Irani was appointed Minister of Information & Broadcasting around the same time when ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ was taken by her for marketing and distribution. When the film was severely attacked by the CBFC, Ekta expressed her displeasure to the new I&B Minster."

Ekta has known Smriti for nearly two decades now, and it was she who had offered Smriti the iconic role of Tulsi Virani in ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’. As for the CBFC, Prasoon Joshi has stepped in as its new chief.
