In an exclusive conversation director, Ashim Ahluwalia reveals that he is attracted to stories which delve into the underbelly of society
Filmmaker Ashim Ahluwalia’s first feature film, ‘Miss Lovely’ was showcased at the Cannes film festival and was about the C-grade film industry which produces horror and soft-porn films.

His second film, ‘Daddy,’ is a biopic on gangster-turned-politician Arun Gawli. What seems to be common between the two films is that Ashim is attracted to stories which delve into the underbelly of society. In a recent interview, the directoradmitted, “I think I am drawn to characters who live on the margins of society. I feel that I am on the margins of the industry and so, I like characters who don’t belong and are outsiders. Be it a gangster like Gawli, a C-grade actor or a producer making something in the middle of nowhere — when they don’t belong is when they are free. You see them for who they are because they don’t conform. I like characters who don’t play by the rules."

Helmed by Ashim Ahluwalia and starring Arjun Rampal in the titular role as 'Daddy', the Arun Gawli biopic releases on 8th September 2017.
