Here’s why Karan Johar felt spineless after having to apologise

The Uri attacks last year followed by tension on the India and Pakistan border left the whole country devastated. It was after these attacks that political parties decided to impose a ban on Pakistani artistes from seeking work in India. Karan Johar's 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil' starring Anushka Sharma, Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Fawad Khan was right ahead of its release, and the filmmaker had to bear the brunt for casting Pakistani artistes Fawad and Imran Abbas in the film.
Karan received threats from political parties asking him to replace the two actors. He was also warned against the release of 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil'. Considering that the situation was escalating, Karan gave in and sent out his statement in a video. He apologised in the video and promised to not cast Pakistani artists in his films henceforth.
While the situation was grave back then, the filmmaker and best friend Twinkle Khanna joked over it calling it a 'hostage video'. Talking about the video in a recent interview, Karan said, "I felt spineless after having to apologise in 'hostage video' before Ae Dil Hai Mushkil's release."
