During the time Kabir Khan and Salman Khan were shooting together for 'Tubelight', there were reports that the two have their differences and their relations over the years have hit a roadblock. Reports of the same nature also surfaced when the two were shooting for 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan'.

However, filmmaker Kabir says that his equation with Salman has evolved over the years. While Kabir agrees that he and Salman have had arguments on the sets, the filmmaker also adds, "My equation with Salman wasn't always as great as it is today. It has evolved over the years. We have been working together for six years. During 'Ek Tha Tiger' (2012), our sensibilities weren't matching. He wasn't looking at the film the way I was, but that helped cement our association. Our sensibilities could blend, instead of clash — a formula we used successfully in 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan'."

Kabir further adds, "In 'Tubelight', he has brought his skills to the fore. People say he is moody or unreasonable. I have never seen that side of him. Yes, he has a strong point of view, and we discuss the smallest of details. But I love these debates because I realise he is right. We don't have stand-offs. One of us always manages to convince the other."

While Kabir and Salman have had their disagreements, Kabir has found a mentor in Salman's father Salim Khan. "Once my screenplay is ready, I take it to Salim saab, whether or not my film stars Salman. How many filmmakers have that privilege? Salim saab is a master and picks up nuances. He never nitpicks, but scans for loopholes and makes the screenplay better," says Kabir as he adds that Salim Khan liked 'Tubelight' and that the veteran writer's suggestions were incorporated in the film.
