No more ban on ‘Padmaavat’, says Supreme Court

On Wednesday the Supreme Court had agreed to hear a plea of the producers of ‘Padmaavat’ on Thursday opposing the ban on its screening in various states. The plea should be heard urgently as the film is set to release in the coming week, was considered by the judiciary combining of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud. The plea was submitted by the production house of the film and other producers of film ‘Padmaavat’. Now it has been said that the Supreme Court has suspended the ban on four states.


Apparently, the state governments of Gujarat, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh have declared that they will not allow the screening of ‘Padmaavat’ in their states. The producers went to the SC through the help of senior lawyer Harish Salve and advocate Mahesh Agarwal and submitted a petition stating that the movie has undergone all the changes, including its title as well, as suggested by the CBFC. They said that the states cannot simply ban a film, and the screening can be suspended in some particular area on account of law and order and not across the state.


The bench said, "When a matter is pending for consideration before the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), how can persons in public authority comment on whether the CBFC should issue a certificate or not? It will prejudice the decision of CBFC.”


The police said that the Rajputs staged a sit-in protest near Rithola, near Udaipur-Ahmedabad highway by blocking the whole way for nearly half an hour. The traffic had to be diverted. No incident was reported due to the security steps the police had taken to deal with the protesters. “The highway resumed to normal after protesters discussed their future course of action on the 'Padmaavat' release issue.”


It has been said that now the Supreme Court has suspended the ban on screening ‘Padmaavat’ in four states which are Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan.
