Shahid Kapoor: Mira is speaking for women who aren't represented

Mira Rajput's recent comments about parenthood at a recent International Women's Day event in the city did not go down well with the public. During the interaction, Mira said that she is proud to be a homemaker and prefers being a hands-on mum rather than those who prefer spending only an hour with their children. Talking about it further, Mira added that kids are not puppies that you can leave them behind. These statements by Mira did not go down well with the audience, and the star wife received a lot of flak for the same.

Shahid, who was present at a recent awards ceremony in the city cleared the air regarding the same and came out in support of his wife. Shahid clarified that Mira never meant any disrespect towards any particular section of women and was just putting forth a point. The actor said, "First of all when Mira started the conversation she said that they were her personal comments. I don't think she meant to comment at anybody or any category of women, so to speak. I think she was talking from a very personal standpoint. I think Mira is speaking for a section of women who aren't being represented. There are times when those women feel like they should not be celebrated... by that I mean the women who may not be doing a job outside, or women who might choose to be at home, have a baby, take care of that baby and consider that something important enough to do. This is at a certain stage in their lives. At a different stage, they might choose to do something else. Like I took 5 months off when I was having Misha because I felt it was important for me to be with my wife and my child. So that's a choice you make out of a certain sense of independence."

The 'Padmavati' actor further added, "I think there are very few people who are showing any kind of appreciation towards these women. What a mother does for a child should be appreciated, they should be empowered and they should be self-assured that what they do is as important as any other job. I feel that though I might be the one who goes to work, between me and Mira as husband and wife, but I think what she's doing for Misha is far more important and far more relevant. I wish I could do that but one of us has to go to work, I happen to be that person. So I think she was speaking from a very positive space, I do understand that every body has a very strong point of view. But I think we are in a time where everybody is getting hurt about everything. We are also in a time when somebody important says something, a lot of people want to gain importance by saying something against them. We just live in those times. I personally find what she is saying is relevant. What she is saying that women should have that choice. Want to go to work, men should respect that. Want to stay at home and be a housewife, men should learn to respect housewives as well. Home runs when all factors are balanced out. I think she spoke very clearly that she has respect for people who chose to do either of these."
