Whether for ads or films, content is the most important aspect for director Karan Narvekar

Entering Bollywood didn’t figure in the scheme of things for Karan Narvekar, but he has gone on to direct the biggest of B-Town names, including Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kangana Ranaut and Ranbir Kapoor, as an ad filmmaker. “Working with all of them in commercials has been like a training ground to helm films on my own. Managing to tell a story in a matter of seconds in ads proves to be a great tool to hone your skills as a director,” he explains.

Karan, who has assisted Rajkumar Hirani on Lage Raho Munnabhai, 3 Idiots and PK, maintains he’s most gung-ho about meaningful stories. Ergo, despite being ready to take off as a director after creating noteworthy stuff like the series of kidult Munnabhai-Circuit ads or the slick and edgy song video Ruby Ruby from Sanju, he is waiting for the right story to make his film debut. “The schooling that I’ve had with Raju sir is of hard work and intellect. The subject will always come first for me,” he states. To drive home the point, the promising director concludes on a lighter note, “When I see a movie on a great subject, I get jealous that I didn’t come up with it!”
