Rohit Vaid, who holds the rights to the biopic, has approached Varun Dhawan to play the lead
Karan Johar last year announced that he will be making a biopic on the hockey legend Dhyan Chand. There were reports that the filmmaker has approached Varun Dhawan to play the lead in the biopic. However, Varun back then denied the news. Rohit Vaid, who holds the rights for the film, recently won a National Award for his directorial 'Mahayodha Ram'.

While Karan and Varun weren't very keen on having Rohit on board, after his National Award win, the duo is now reconsidering their decision. The constant delay in the making of the film is due to Rohit still working on the script. With Rohit soon to be ready with the script, he is soon going to approach Varun again for the film.

Taking about the current status of the film to a leading daily, Rohit said, "The people involved knew that I’d bought the rights of Dhyan Chand and had offered it to them on the condition that I would direct. There was no issue! They only wanted some changes incorporated. I’ve reworked the script along with Agneepath writer Ila Bedi."

He further adds, "I will approach Varun again with the new script." The filmmaker has also given a narration of the script to other actors as well. "Shah Rukh Khan showed great interest, but he won’t fit the age group. Ranbir Kapoor is a friend and was also given a narration. He loved the story, but he was already doing another biopic (Sanjay Dutt), so he couldn’t do it," said Rohit.

Talking about the biopic, Rohit asserts, "It took me five years to do research on him as nobody had a clue about him anymore and there’s hardly anything in his autobiography. We spoke to his son Ashok Dhyanchand and to many people in India and Pakistan. What we have now is very exciting."

The film will depict the legendary player's life from his childhood to his last match. What we still await to see is that which actor will finally sign on to do the film.
