Karan Johar made the headlines yesterday when he announced a new film titled 'Rannbhoomi' with Varun Dhawan. Varun is said to be playing the role of a warrior in the film. 'Rannbhoomi' will be directed by Shashank Khaitan. Now, sources in the know have revealed that 'Rannbhoomi' is a reworked version of 'Shuddhi' which was also supposed to be made by Karan. Unfortunately, the project never took off. Karan had announced 'Shuddhi' with Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor Khan in 2013. But eventually, Hrithik had bowed out of the film.

After that Salman Khan was roped in for the film, but he too had made his exit from the project. Finally, Karan had brought in Varun and Alia Bhatt for the film in 2015. However, the film still didn't take off. A source revealed, "Karan was always attached to 'Shuddhi' and felt it would bowl the audience over if it were to be made. While Karan Malhotra was supposed to helm it in 2013, Karan now entrusted the job to Shashank. The director has reworked the script to suit a younger actor like Varun. The budget too has been resized."

"Since he could not roll 'Shuddhi' in the past four years, Karan felt that it was a bad omen. So he was sure that this project would not share the same title," the source added.
