5 foods to get more Vitamin D in your diet

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that your body requires to improve bone, muscle and teeth health.

It is popularly known as the "sunshine vitamin" because our skin makes a lot it when it is exposed to the sun. However, in this day and age with air pollution issues and long hours at the office, many of us don't get enough sunlight we require.

Insufficient amounts of the vitamin can lead to osteomalacia or deformities. “Vitamin D is essential for strong bones because it helps the body use calcium from the diet. Traditionally, vitamin D deficiency has been associated with rickets, a disease in which the bone tissue doesn’t properly mineralize, leading to soft bones and skeletal deformities," a news portal reported.



Here are some foods that can provide you with adequate amounts of Vitamin D:

1. Salmon: The fatty fish is a great source of Vitamin D and should be incorporated into your diet regularly.

2. Cod liver oil: It is a great dietary supplement of the vitamin. It is also rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

3. Eggs: Egg yolks are a great alternative if you are not a fan of seafood as it contains high amounts of Vitamin D.

4. Mushrooms:A plant-based source for Vitamin is mushrooms as it also naturally produces the nutrient when exposed to sunlight.

5. Yoghurt: When dairy products are fortified it becomes rich in vital minerals and a vitamin including Vitamin D. Yoghurt is one of those products you can easily add to your diet to nourish your body with what it needs.
