A former top cop in India: Nirbhaya’s mother has such a good physique

Former top cop of Karnataka has safeguarded his comments for Nirbhaya’s mother during an award function which was held recently. HT Sangliana, the Director General of Police in Karnataka stated, “As an ex-police DGP (Director General of Police, I consider my statement to be totally within limits. It should be taken in the right spirit. It was complimentary and without ill intention – if it was mistaken by anybody I feel sorry for them…Some people are extra-sensitive.”


The Director-General had stunned the audience of the event, organised to honour women, last week when he said, “I see Nirbhaya’s mother, she has such a good physique. I can just imagine how beautiful Nirbhaya would have been. If you are overpowered, you should surrender and follow up the case later. That way we can be safe, save our life.”


Nirbhaya’s mother, Asha Devi, too was being felicitated at the event. Apart from her IPS officer D Roopa was present at the event , who tweeted, “Met Nirbhaya’s mother today.” She spoke how the society stigmatises rape victims rather than stigmatising the culprits. It’s for citizens to play active role in checking crimes against women. Ex MP, IPS Sangliana was present I received ‘Nirbhaya Award’ on the occasion.”


Asha Devi reacted to the comments HT Sangliana had made and said, “It would have been better if he had spoken about our struggle than making a personal remark. It shows that people's mentalities in our society has not changed.”


In December 2012 Nirbhaya was brutally gang-raped in a moving bus in Delhi. She had later succumbed to her injuries. Her rapists are still alive despite the Supreme Court convicting them many months ago. One of her rapists, a juvenile, is now out after serving two years term in a juvenile correction center.
