A new study states that kindness can make you feel happier

Whether there is a reward coming our way for being kind to someone or not, kindness should be part of our lives none the less. The glow of kindness is real and helping someone out or making someone feel better always pays off. Psychologists at the University of Sussex have confirmed the fact, however, they state that performing selfless acts of kindness can make one a happier person after conducting research on nearly a 1,000 people making kind decisions.

The University of Sussex found that reward areas of the brain are more active — i.e. use up more oxygen — when people act with strategic kindness when there is an opportunity for others to return the favour. They also found that some brain regions were more active during altruistic generosity. “The finding of different motivations for giving raises all sorts of questions, including what charities and organisations can learn about what motivates their donors. Some museums, for example, choose to operate a membership scheme with real strategic benefits for their customers, such as discounts,” said co-author Jo Cutler.
The full findings of this research have been published in the journal, NeuroImage.
