Soon, you will be able to spot a blue moon and a red moon occur on the exact same night. What’s more? There also will be a supermoon! When, you ask? On the 31st of January! And trust us when we say that you shouldn't be missing this because the phenomenon will be taking place after almost 151 years.
A lunar eclipse will occur on the 31st of January where the Earth, sun and moon will all be in perfect alignment with Earth in the middle, casting its umbral shadow on the moon. A blue moon happens when two full moons occur in the same calendar month and so the 31st January supermoon will be the second full moon of the month, a rare phenomenon that happens every two and a half years on an average. So, that's about the blue moon. That night, the moon will be closest to the Earth, appearing 14% bigger and 30% brighter than a normal moon. This is occurring on the same day as the blue moon, which is the 2nd full moon of the month as explained above and so the 31st will also see a supermoon. Lastly, The eclipse happening on 31st is a total lunar eclipse, which will cast a shadow of the Earth perfectly blocking the moon. NASA has said that that the moon will lose its brightness and take on an eerie, fainter-than-normal glow from the scant sunlight that makes its way through Earth’s atmosphere, which will give it a reddish colour because of the way atmosphere bends the light.
