Going to the gym is probably the most effective way of burning those calories but still isn’t the most preferred by people. This could because of many reasons. Typically, the expensive membership and the lack of knowledge of equipment are the reasons people trying staying away from gyms. Now, that’s where technology comes to play in. Thanks to the growing popularity of YouTube, we now have dedicated channels for fitness and exercise. These have huge followings of people who would like a good workout but don’t have the time to spend in the gym.

These online workouts are result-oriented and have helped many people lose weight, even when they weren’t motivated to exercise. However, online workouts involve exercising along with the person on the screen. While some people who already have a decent understanding of exercising, can copy the exercises of the trainer, the rest of the people do the exercise without knowing the correct technique, with a potential of harming the body, which makes one wonder – are online workouts safe?

According to Dr. Garima Anandani, Senior Spine Specialist and Clinical Director, QI Spine Clinic, “One size fits all seems to be the mantra with the buzz of online workout sessions. However, every individual requires a customized plan based on his physical evaluation, fitness testing, and medical parameters. Based on the above parameters an individualized program will work to suit the need and avoid any injury.”

Dr Kiran Sangani, Medical Director, Melt. Health, a metabolic upgrade center added, “Exercising under supervision will always help in doing correct form, using correct technique, doing optimal intensity and quantity and following correct breathing techniques during different exercise forms thereby helping prevent injury and reducing risk of abnormal physiological responses to exercise. This gets all the more important for people suffering from any disorders/diseases like heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, or any other metabolic disorder where parameters can fluctuate daily.

Online workout sessions may look highly appealing to you but remember, they need to be followed with caution. If you feel any discomfort, it is best to consult an expert.
To conclude, one must remember that if they are following an online workout, remember to follow it with caution. If you’re unable to do a certain exercise move, it’s best to skip it till you’re able to get expert advice on it.
