Are we more likely to waste healthy food?

We all like our junk food, be it burgers or pizzas or sodas and we often tend to feel really bad if we have to throw out any of that food. But now, as it turns out, a research shows that people generally waste a lot of healthy food. This food is just thrown out because people fail to consume it. A research conducted by the University of Vermont states that the exact amount of food wasted is directly linked to how healthy the diet is.

In fact, the food wasted amounts to about 30 percent of the calories the average American consumes on a daily basis. Now, isn't that just shocking? Nearly 150,000 tons of food per day was wasted by the American between 2007 and 2014. And this has used 30 million acres of land and 4.2 trillion gallons of irrigation water each year. Meredith Niles, the co-author of the study has called out for more conscious thinking when it comes to wasting food.

"Higher quality diets have greater amounts of fruits and vegetables, which are being wasted in greater quantities than other food," Niles said. The study also found that people tend to avoid healthy foods that look ugly like eggplants or an ugly looking carrot. Stay tuned for more updates.
