We do a lot for cutting down on those extra kilos. Some go on an intensive diet while some seek help from an extreme workout routine. But do you realise that a lot many might be doing a few wrong things in order to lose weight which in turn makes them weak health wise?

One such common mistake is where people go overly restrictive on themselves and try to do everything at once which also includes cutting down on everything at once.

A practising dietitian Margaret Mielczarek says, "Cutting everything out all at once typically doesn't last and often leads to throwing in the towel on well-intended efforts and bingeing or overeating."

This is something that many people get it wrong. You're supposed to eventually make changes in your diet and lifestyle which will ultimately show results that you desire. She says, "Like with any other goal, consistency is key. This is why we've created the Youfoodz 70/30 program, which is all about eating healthy 70 per cent of the time and enjoying your fave treats 30 per cent of the time. It helps make healthy eating easy and turns it into a lifestyle rather than a diet."

You cannot be rushing into your goal to lose weight but in fact figure out things that can work for you instead of doing everything that everyone is doing. She explains further, "You need to figure out what will work for you based on your goals, how much exercise you're doing, your energy requirements and your medical history and what you can stick with consistently. If 'fasting' or skipping that mid-meal snack works for you - great! If you're someone who needs a mid-meal snack to get through the afternoon or to fuel your after-work gym session, that's okay too, just make sure you reach for a healthy option."

Feeling inspired to change your lifestyle into a healthy one isn't any wrong. But there's an advice that Margaret would want to give. She says, "Nutrition is very individual and dependent on your goals, exercise level, life stage, medical history and energy requirements. Before choosing any weight-loss approach, it's important to consider all of these factors and consult a doctor or dietitian - then you can decide what approach will work for you."
