Want to boost your brain health? One expert says to load up on healthy fats. While it may be intimidating at first, these foods can help cognitive function in ways you can't imagine.

If you're worried about weight gain, don't be says, Mark Hyman, M.D., a Functional Medicine Doctor. "The right kinds (fat) will not, but they will provide powerful healing and support to help you feel your best. That's because 60 per cent of your brain is made up of DHA, an omega-3 fat found in fatty fish, flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts, and algae," Hyman stated in a report by a news portal. Adding "EPA is another important type of omega-3, and both of these fatty acids are critical for supporting brain function and mood, regulating metabolism, and preventing diabetes and inflammation."

It is important to note that many common mental health issues can contribute to issues like brain fog and need to be taken seriously to improve brain health. "About 20 years ago, when I became seriously ill with chronic fatigue syndrome, I felt like I simultaneously had dementia, depression, and ADD," Hyman revealed. This caused him to suffer from brain fog and mercury toxicity.

However, this experience helped him understand how we treat our bodies impacts our brain as well. In the report, Haymay stated: "Fixing your brain starts with fixing your body: optimizing all the inputs and taking out the bad influences."

Giving the brain the right support can help it heal from a host of issues. That is where healthy fats come in to play. Avocado, nuts, seeds, olive oil and coconut oil are all products that contain healthy fats. Consume these types of food daily to get the most out of it. You don't have to consume low carb foods just because you are eating fats. Opt for plant foods that are low-glycemic like cauliflower, peppers, onions, asparagus, celery, radishes, mushrooms, blackberries, blueberries, and dark leafy green vegetables.

Hyman recommends staying clear of the following oils as they can cause inflammation:

-Canola oil
-Grapeseed oil
-Corn oil
-Sunflower oil
-Soybean oil
-Hydrogenated oils
