Budget 2018: Around 10 crore poor people to be provided with comprehensive health care

India's Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley has announced that the National Health Policy Scheme (NHPS) will now cover around 10 crore poor people and vulnerable families. They will be provided with Rs 5 lakh per annum, per family for secondary and tertiary purposes. The government is to set up 1.5 lakh centres that will provide people with health care, maternal care, child care services, treatment of diseases and more. Reportedly, a whopping amount of Rs 1200 crore will be allotted to this cause which will also include free essential diagnostics and drugs.

The Minister further added that to ensure quality medical education, around 24 medical colleges will be set up by upgrading the district hospitals in the states of the country. The NHPS will be the largest health scheme in the world. Earlier, the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) was the largest healthcare scheme in the world as it had offered Rs 30,000 crore to the poor. The Minister further added that through the help of this scheme the poor may no longer have to sell their assets to survive. Stay tuned for more updates.
