A new study has found that new types of oral contraceptives containing both oestrogens and progestogens may reduce the risk of ovarian cancer in younger women. The results showed that the positive effects of the pill remained even after they had stopped taking the pill. Over 100 million women today use some form of oral contraception. Some previous research had shown that women who use combined contraceptives showed a reduced risk of ovarian cancer.

Whereas women who used newer contraceptives would also like to know whether they could share the same benefits. The University of Aberdeen in Scotland and the University of Copenhagen in Denmark investigated what kinds of effects oral contraceptives had on overall and specific types of ovarian cancer in women of reproductive age. After considering a number of factors like age, parity etc, they found that the cases of ovarian cancer were most prevalent in women who had never used hormonal contraception.

Based on all such figures they said that hormonal contraception prevented an estimated 21% of ovarian cancers in this group of women. Stay tuned for more updates.
