Can drinking more water reduce bladder infections in women?

A yearlong study has resulted in the findings that women who consume about 1.5 litres of additional water than their daily intake, seem to have fewer bladder infections. It was found that these women who drank extra water had the risk of infections reduced by 48% which is nearly half as compared to women who didn't drink extra water. Yair Lotan, a professor at the University of Texas in the US said that most women reported that they drank less than 1.5 litres of water daily.

“These findings are important because more than half of all women report having bladder infections, which are one of the most common infections in women,” said Lotan. As per the research, more than a quarter of the women experience another urinary infection within six months of getting the first one and 44 to 77 per cent will have a recurrence within a year. The research suggests that fluids reduce the bacteria and also inhibit their ability from attaching themselves to the bladder.

These kinds of infections are usually treated with antibiotics. Since fluids can help reduce the risk of these infections, it is better to drink water as this will reduce dependency on antibiotics and will also help control antibiotic resistance.
