Can eating radishes prevent the onset of heart strokes?

Eat carrots for good eyes, eat broccoli for good health, these are just a few of the things our mothers told us. While they were right about those things, here's something even they probably didn't know. Recent research states that eating radishes could prevent the chances of a heart stroke. Reportedly, compounds found in the Sakurajima Daikon, or “monster” radish could protect coronary blood vessels which might help prevent a heart stroke.

The Guinness Book of World Records in 2003, certified a Sakurajima weighing nearly 69 pounds as the world’s heaviest radish. And they have been grown in Japan for centuries. Not only are radishes a great source of antioxidants, they're also known to reduce high blood pressure and prevent the formation of blood clots. Both high blood pressure and blood clots when combined form a deadly pair which is what usually causes strokes.

The study appeared in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. Now researchers hope to use such kinds of research to find different compounds in other vegetables that might be of use to new drug treatment methods. Well, looks like radishes are saving the day this time. Stay tuned for more updates.
