Can lack of Vitamin D lead to depression?

Vitamin D deficiency in older adults can lead to depression, a new study has found. The study found that depletion in Vitamin D levels was associated with a rise in depression levels by 75%. Depression during the late stages of life can significantly reduce the quality of life which can lead to a higher risk of early death. Vitamin D which is usually also known as 'sunshine vitamin' is essential for good bone health. And a decline in Vitamin D can be linked with non-bone health outcomes such as inflammation and diabetes.

Even after controlling certain factors like depressive symptoms, chronic disease burden, physical activity and cardiovascular disease, it was found that a lack of Vitamin D could still cause depression. In fact, the findings weren't altered even after taking anti-depressant medication and vitamin D supplementation. The researchers also suggested that this might be happening due to the direct effect of Vitamin D on the brain. They suggested that Vitamin D might help prevent the risk of depression during early life stages which might help people not develop depression in the later stages of their lives. Well, this certainly proves how necessary Vitamin D is for the body. Stay tuned for more updates.
