Mindfulness refers to a mind-body practice where individuals learn to achieve a heightened sense of their state and their surroundings. A new study has found that mindfulness training might just help individuals tackle obesity. Healthcare providers have now started to turn towards this training as a problem-solving method for obesity. According to the WHO (World Health Organisation), obesity levels have nearly tripled in size since 1975.

The researchers conducted a study where 53 people were asked to attend multidisciplinary tier 3 weight management programs. Out of these at least 33 people completed 3 out of 4 mindfulness sessions. The participants were subjected to programs such as the difference between mindful and mindless eating as well as an introduction to Compassionate Mind Therapy. It was found that the individuals who completed 3 out of 4 courses lost around 3 kgs in six months, whereas those who attended only 1 or 2 courses, lost about 0.9 kgs. But nevertheless, individuals who attended the programs managed to lose more weight as compared to individuals who didn't.

"Surveys of the participants indicate mindfulness training can help this population improve their relationship with food. Individuals who completed the course said they were better able to plan meals in advance and felt more confident in self-management of weight loss moving forward," said a researcher. Well, are you willing to give this technique a try? Stay tuned for more updates.
