Children's mental health issues: Can watching violence on screen make children emotionally distressed?

A new study has found that children who watch violence of some form on-screen are more emotionally distressed than other children. In this age of technology, it isn't difficult for children to get access to a video on the Internet or on TV. Studies have shown that most TV shows and cartoons for children contain both physical as well as verbal violence and this can prove to be detrimental to them.

After measuring certain factors, it was found that these children also grew up to be more antisocial. Their behaviour included a lack of remorse, lying, insensitivity to the emotions of others and manipulating others. These children also seemed to be sadder and lacked enthusiasm. And these results were the same for both boys and girls which proves that gender has no role in this.

A few ways to counteract these problems are: Creating age-appropriate programs which help children understand words or ideas and help them develop mental and linguistic skills. One can also model positive non-violent behaviour like using respectful communication to solve problems rather than opting for violence. And lastly, it would also help if parents strictly monitored the content their child watches or has access to. Stay tuned for more updates.
