Colitis infection or colon infection is the inflammation on the inner lining walls of the colon or large intestine that affects the rectum and the intestines. From the digestive system to bowel movements, the colon plays a crucial role in determining the proper absorption if the nutrients from food. Not to mention, an infection in the colon can be very painful and even lead towards colorectal cancer if not treated properly.

Recently, one Bollywood’s finest, Irrfan Khan succumbed to this very deadly infection leaving his fans at a state of shock. His demise has taught us how fatal this disease can be. Hence, we must pay extra care to our health by focusing on developing healthy eating habits and paying attention to the early signs to reduce the risks of a colon infection. Most importantly there are certain foods that can be the best and worst when it comes to risks of developing a colon infection. While you should avoid the later, make sure your intake of the former foods remains high.

Having a well-balanced diet every day is one of the best ways to ensure your immune system stays strong to ward off infections, including colitis inflammation. Similarly, an adequate amount of both fruits and vegetables in the diet is beneficial to boost the immunity level. We also recommend taking probiotics to improve the digestive system. Food items like pulses, nuts, fruits, potatoes with skin and whole grains come packed with fibre that also helps to regulate the bowel movement. On the other hand, protein-rich food such as fish and tofu are equally important to maintain good health.

Coming back to food that one must avoid, we recommend going easy on spicy and fried foods. Avoiding food with a high amount of sugar and saturated fats, such as pastries and candies are also ideal to keep a check on your health. Any canned or processed food can increase the risk of developing colon infection as well. Avoid carbonated drinks, cabbage, chana dal, caffeine and cured meat. Smoking and drinking alcohol is also injurious for health.
