Disney closed its Walt Disneyland and other flagship theme-parks across North America, Europe and Asia in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. Declared pandemic by the World Health Organisation, the COVID 19 has now caused a halt to the magic world of Disney. This is being seen as the latest sign of freefall in the tourism industry. However, no cases of infection have been found from any of these parks, yet the Disney authority decides to keep their gates shut till the end of March for the betterment of the guests.

“In an abundance of caution and in the best interest of our guests and employees, we are proceeding with the closure of our theme parks at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disneyland Paris Resort, beginning at the close of business on Sunday, March 15th, through the end of the month,” said a Disney spokesperson.

This shutdown now includes the Walt Disney Resort in California, the Disney Cruise Line, Disneyland Paris and other Disney theme parks of the company until any further notice. However, in the announcement, Disney added that its employees and crew members will continue to receive their pay even during the closure period and urged employees from its other divisions, such as ESPN, Walt Disney Studios to work from home for safety.

The lockdown of Disneyland clearly states the severity of the infection caused by the COVID-19 virus. It is being said to be the first time in the history of Walt Disney that the parks will be closed altogether at a stretch for such a long period.

This is the rarest of all times that Disneyland has remained shut, including times of John F Kennedy’s assassination on 25th of November 1963, Northridge earthquake in 1994, Hurricane Floyd in 1999, 9/11 attack on 11 September 2001 and in other situation of hurricanes.

The company stated that they are doing their best to deal with the on-going situation and will adhere to the guidelines of the health advisors and officials regarding the prevention of the virus.
