Could this new treatment help tackle obesity?

Obesity has now turned into an epidemic which has pretty much become one of the leading causes of death worldwide. However, new research now states that bariatric surgery, specifically Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) could be the most effective method to get rid of obesity. Professor Patricia DiLorenzo said, "People who have this surgery are what we call morbidly obese, meaning that they are at least 100 pounds overweight, and in many cases are diabetic. It's life or death for them."

RYGB is a form of surgery wherein the stomach is cut down into a small pouch, so a person is unable to consume large amounts of food. This obviously leads to weight loss. However, taste and odour preferences also seem to have changed for a few people who underwent the surgery. The research team investigated this and found that people who were more attracted to coffee post the surgery, lost the most amount of weight.

This proves that the surgery does have a small percentage of involvement in altering a person's taste and odour preferences. Although a few patients risk gaining weight despite the surgery, most of them have gone on to reduce weight effectively. Stay tuned for more updates.
