Could your sweet tooth be causing all those skin problems?

Breakout and acne, spots and blemishes, wrinkles and sagging are all skin conditions. Caused by what, you ask? Well, there could be a plethora of reasons why your skin is acting the way it is, be it pollution, sun damage or even irresponsible skincare routines. But the one thing we almost always overlook is having a sweet tooth. Sugar is not your skin's best friend, ladies! In fact, it could become your worst foe.

Sugar contains molecules that end up binding to the proteins and lipids of the skin, and this can severely affect collagen production in your skin. What's worse is that it could even attach itself to blood vessels which prevent nutrients from nourishing your skin and thus, “skin starts to wrinkle, look dull, and loses tone.”

And since something called muscle memory exists, your body ends up registering things that are bad for it and eventually, it starts to affect your body even more. “When you’re 21, you can drink a lot and not have a headache the next morning,” says Alexiades-Armenakas, dermatologist. "But it’s harder to rally when you’re nearing 30. You don’t have the same ability to process the toxic content. It’s the same situation with your skin."

She suggests that about one treat a day should work fine but you shouldn't indulge in more than that. She also suggests that you switch from sugary drinks and foods to less sugary drinks and antioxidant-rich fruit and vegetables. Also, opt for antioxidant-rich skincare products to help boost collagen production in your skin.
