Death risk reduced with the frequent use of saunas, study states

Today, we have come across a study that states that using a sauna can reduce the risk of death by cardiovascular diseases especially in those who are aged 50 and above. Regular sauna use is associated with a lowered risk of death by heart diseases as a sauna lowers blood pressure — a key factor for the increased risk of heart disease and death.

"More regular sauna use is associated with a lower risk of death from CVD in middle-aged to elderly women as well as in men," said Professor Jari Laukkanen from the University of Eastern Finland. "There are several possible reasons why sauna use may decrease the risk of death due to CVD. Our research team has shown in previous studies that high sauna use is associated with lower blood pressure," said Laukkanen.

Also, sauna use is known to trigger an increase in heart rate equal to that seen in low to moderate intensity physical exercise. This is good for patients with heart disease. As part of the study, 1,688 participants were involved and the researchers followed them for 15 years. 51.4 percent of the participants were women. Published in the journal, BMC Medicine, the study shows that the number of new cases of mortality due to heart disease decreased as the time spent in the sauna per week increased. The researchers, however, claim that further research is necessary to understand if the findings apply to other populations.
