A recent study has found that consuming a diet that is rich in fast food, sweets and processed meat can lead to depression. These diets are known to promote inflammation and are often high in cholesterol, saturated fats and carbohydrates which can make a person 40% more likely to develop depression. The researchers analysed data from 11 existing studies that had taken place over the years and had included more than 100,000 participants of varied age (16-72 years old), gender and ethnicity.

Each participant was asked to rate how inflammatory their diet was. Based on all this information it was found that participants with a high inflammatory diet were 1.4 times more likely to develop depression. And regardless of age or gender, the results of the research were consistent throughout. "These results have tremendous clinical potential for the treatment of depression, and if it holds true, other diseases such as Alzheimer's which also have an underlying inflammatory component," said a researcher.

They also recommended that it would be a lot better if people changed their diets rather than opting for medical interventions for help as those often come with serious side-effects. Stay tuned for more updates.
