Meat eaters rejoice! Here's some good news for you. A new study has found that women who eat meat are a lot less prone to certain diseases like diabetes, cardiac ailments, cancer and obesity. The study was conducted on women between the ages of 18 and 40 years. Around 464 from Delhi and Kashmir enrolled for the study between 2015 and 2018. Amongst these women who consumed meat were from Kashmir whereas the ones who ate a vegetarian diet were from Delhi.

The groups also included women who were healthy as well as women who suffered from PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). Based on their dietary preferences, the women were divided into two groups. The results found that women who ate non-vegetarian meals for up to five days a week were a lot healthier compared to women who ate a vegetarian diet, and this was irrespective of whether they had PCOS or not.

“It is a well- known fact that a Mediterranean diet has low risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and obesity. We thought that an Indian vegetarian diet would be equally healthy, but in this study, the results were contrary. We checked the inflammatory markers and insulin resistance in both categories and found that the parameters were better in women from Kashmir who consumed non-vegetarian food,” said a doctor who led the study.

Well, one must also remember that moderation and the type of meat might also play a role here so consult your dietitian before you jump to any conclusions. Stay tuned for more updates.
