We all are aware of the growing cases of diabetes in the world. No wonder India alone has more than 69 million diabetics as per International Diabetes Federation Atlas. While Type 1 diabetes is usually hereditary with no cure, type 2 is more common among Indians that form 95% of the total diabetes cases. However, the good news is type 2 diabetes can be treated easily with the right treatment. According to doctors, eating high-quality carbs, such as whole grains can effectively prevent the risks of type 2 diabetes.

A recent conducted by a pool of experts from Harvard University in the US suggests that a high intake of carbohydrates can be related to the risks of type 2 diabetes. They also found that swapping poor-quality carbs with saturated fats can also lower the risk of type 2 diabetes. On the other hand, high-quality carbohydrates can help to lower the health risks due to type 2 diabetes.

To confirm the theory researchers studied the effects of high-quality carbs and low-quality carbs, such as refined grains, sugary food items and starchy foods on health. They observed data from popular health studies with almost 12000 cases of type 2 diabetes for better understanding.

The author of the study also mentioned in his article that further studies is to be conducted among people from different socio-economical backgrounds, ethnicity and age to have a clear understanding.

The study will be presented at ‘Nutrition 2020 live online’, a virtual conference held by the American Society for Nutrition in the upcoming week.
