Everything that you should know about ponytail headaches

We love styling our hair to our desire. Sometimes we tweak our hair into a bun, or braid them with colourful tinsels, but nothing beats the convenience of a classic ponytail. Whether you are in office, gym or just out for a brunch with your gal pals, a ponytail is the safest option for our hair. Look at Ariana Grande to draw some hair-inspo! It keeps the hair out of our face while making sure we look chic in every look. This summertime favourite hairstyle is easy to make and requires zero technique that none need to master. However, sweeping the mane into a sleek looking tight ponytail with a hair tie can put pressure on your scalp. This is why ponytail can cause headaches when left for a longer time.

The reason behind is the sensitivity of the nerves in our hair. These nerves can sense pain due to the tightness of the hairstyle. If prolonged for a long time, this can cause severe headaches.

Ponytail headaches are common and can be induced by other conditions, such as stress, migraines or a chronic pain condition like fibromyalgia. One may also experience the same headache from wearing a tight hijab, braid or a headscarf.

To treat your ponytail, begin with massaging your scalp gently to improve the blood circulation of the affected scalp area. If you happen to experience the headaches frequently, we advise you to try some other hairstyles that shouldn’t be secured tightly.

You may also consider short hairstyles to prevent headaches or use bobby pins to keep the hair tie away from your scalp. Ponytail headaches usually go away within an hour of removing your hairstyle, if the pain persists, consult a doctor.
