Want to improve your heart health? Switch off the TV and consume milk, cheese and cereals for breakfast, according to a new study.

Researchers have found too much TV (more than 21 hours) can increase your risk of high blood pressure by 68 per cent and diabetes by 50 per cent.Risk of stroke was significantly high for people who watch less than seven hours every week. The study involved close to 2,000 people.

"Our results emphasise the importance of avoiding prolonged periods of sedentary behaviour," lead researcher Sotirios Tsalamandris, a cardiologist at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in Greece. Adding, "These findings suggest a clear message to hit the 'off' button on your TV and abandon your sofa. Even activities of low energy expenditure, such as socialising with friends or housekeeping activities, may have a substantial benefit to your health compared to time spent sitting and watching TV."

Tsalamandris recommends the following activities to improve heart health:

* Recreational activities

* Weight lifting

* Stretching

* Treadmill exercise while watching TV

Along with a good workout, you also need to consume foods that will give you energy.A good breakfast can improve the health of your arteries, as well as your heart. According to the study, people who ate healthy foods in the morning reduced the risk of arterial stiffness.

The study's findings will be presented at the American College of Cardiology's 68th Annual Scientific Session in New Orleans, United States.
