Fat-burning pill could soon be available

Scientists claim a fat-burning pill that could tackle obesity in middle-aged people could soon be available.

Many people tend to gain weight as they age even if they don't exercise less or eat more than usual. Researchers speculate the cause may be due to the inability of adipose tissues, which stores energy, to burn fat effectively over time.

For the study, researchers monitored a group of 54 male and female participants for more than 16 years. The results showed they became 20 per cent heavier despite consuming the same amount of food over the years.

The findings, published in Nature Medicine, led researchers to conclude adipocytes became slower at getting rid of fats gained from food and beverages. These cells can form close to 90 per cent of white fat that accumulates around internal organs, which can cause disease.

Scientists hope to develop a drug that can mimic the role of adipose tissues in order for people to burn fat efficiently as they get older.

"The results indicate for the first time that processes in our fat tissue regulate changes in body weight during ageing in a way that is independent of other factors," study author Professor Peter Arner, of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, told a news portal.

As obesity rates rise so does the cases of diabetes, heart disease and cancer. That is why combating weight gain is essential to maintaining good health."This could open up new ways to treat obesity,"Arner told a news portal.

Meanwhile, another researcher claims he may have also found the best treatment for obesity. “Different from white adipocytes that store fat, the brown or beige adipocytes are considered a ‘metabolic sink’ for fat, glucose and other metabolites,” Dr Shu Wang, an associate professor at Texas Tech, told a news portal.

Adding, “Beige adipocytes can take up and burn excessive glucose and fat to liberate heat; therefore, they are promising targets for the treatment of obesity and its related metabolic disorders, including insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease.”

Previous research claims obesity could be caused due to digital devices like your smartphone. "It is important that the general population know and be aware that, although mobile technology is undoubtedly attractive for its multiple purposes, portability, comfort, access to countless services, information and entertainment sources, it should also be used to improve habits and healthy behaviours," Mirary Mantilla-Morron, the lead author of the study presented at the ACC Latin America conference, told new portal.

Adding, "Spending too much time in front of the Smartphone facilitates sedentary behaviours, reduces the time of physical activity, which increases the risk of premature death, diabetes, heart disease, different types of cancer, osteoarticular discomfort and musculoskeletal symptoms."
