Scientists recently developed a new treatment that could improve the immune system's ability to fight leukaemias that do not respond to current treatments. One in five adult leukaemias reportedly suffers from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Here are some important facts you need to know about the disease.

Leukaemia is a cancer of blood-forming tissues in the body, which include the bone marrow and the lymphatic system. There are many types of leukaemia. There is a range of forms that children are more prone to. Meanwhile, adults develop other forms of the condition. White blood cells are essential for many reasons. However, the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells in leukaemia patients and makes it difficult for them to function properly.

While there are many treatment options, it is complex as there are many factors and types of the disease. Scientists are still trying to understand what causes leukaemia. However, they speculate it could occur due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Here are some of the common signs of leukaemia you need to be aware of:
*Fever
*Losing weight without trying
*Persistent fatigue, weakness
*Frequent or severe infections
*Recurrent nosebleeds
*Swollen lymph nodes, enlarged liver or spleen
*Easy bleeding or bruising
*Bone pain or tenderness
*Tiny red spots develop in your skin
*Excessive sweating

While it is rare, leukaemia is sometimes detected in blood tests. It is also important to note that leukaemia symptoms are not specific and can be easy to miss. Sometimes it can be misdiagnosed for the flu or common health issues. If you notice any of these signs, make sure to consult with a doctor to get it checked.
