The festival that celebrates Lord Ganesha leaving his home on Mount Kailasha to give people his blessings is finally upon us. Ganesh Chaturthi is one festival that has a number of delicacies associated with it. A number of delicious food items are prepared by the God's devotees during this 10-day festival. Here are a few, you can try out.



Modak



Touted to be one of the most popular desserts in Maharashtra, the modak is specially prepared during this festival. Here's what you need:



Ingredients: 1 cup coconut (grated), 1 cup jaggery, A pinch of nutmeg, A pinch of saffron



For the shell: 1 cup water, 2 tsp ghee, 1 cup rice flour



Preparation: Heat a pan and add the coconut and jaggery to it. Keep stirring the concoction and then add the nutmeg and saffron and mix well. Cook this for some time, then keep this aside. Boil water in a dish and add salt and flour and mix well. Cook until half done. Put some ghee on the base of a steel bowl knead it well while the dough is still hot. Flatten some dough, shape it and then add one spoon of the filling onto the dough and seal it. Steam the dough for 15 minutes and your sweet dish is ready.



Thalipeeth



Ingredients:1 cup jowar flour, ¼ cup besan, ¼ cup wheat flour, ¼ cup bajra, ¼ cup rice flour, 1 tsp ginger garlic paste, 2 green chilli finely chopped, ¼ tsp turmeric, ½ tsp coriander powder, ½ tsp cumin powder, ¼ tsp ajwain, 2 tsp sesame seeds, 2 tbsp coriander finely chopped, 1 onion finely chopped, ½ tsp salt, 1 cup water to knead, Oil for roasting.



Preparation: Mix the jowar flour, besan, wheat flour, bajra and rice flour in a bowl. Add 1 tsp ginger garlic paste, 2 green chilli, ¼ tsp turmeric, ½ tsp coriander powder, ½ tsp cumin powder, ¼ tsp ajwain, 2 tsp sesame seeds, 2 tbsp coriander, 1 onion and ½ tsp salt. Mix well. Then add about 1 cup of water and knead the dough. Put some oil into a pan and roll out a section of the dough and then place it in the pan. Cook until done and then serve with curd and butter.



Shrikhand



Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups dahi, 1/4 cup sugar, powdered, 1/2 tsp cardamom powder.



Strain the dahi using a thin cloth and let all the excess water drain. Transfer the dahi into a bowl and then add sugar and cardomom. Mix it well. Put it in a serving bowl and garnish with the remaining cardamom powder. Leave it in the fridge to set for 2 hours.
