Unless you're living under a rock you probably know all about the charcoal face mask trend that's taken over the Internet by storm for the past few months. A lot of beauty bloggers and gurus have claimed that these are THE masks for healthier, glowing skin. However, a lot of dermatologists think otherwise. Skin care experts Dr. Rohit Batra and Dr. Geeta Mehra Fazalbhoy gave a lowdown on what exactly is the deal with these masks.

These masks contain activated charcoal which has a unique ability to bind toxins, oxidised impurities and blackheads and help get rid of them from your skin. The mask strips away pore-clogging particles, removes excess oil and bacteria. It also leaves your skin looking brighter.

However, there's a catch. When we say that it removes impurities from your skin, it ends up removing all the natural oils present on the skin's surface as well. Since these oils are essential in the protection of skin, their removal can cause serious damage. Experts say that while the charcoal itself may not be harmful to your skin, the glue used in them can be really dangerous.

So, if you do plan on using a charcoal mask, try not to use any other product on your skin immediately after taking it off. Stay tuned for more updates.
