When is the last time you got eight hours worth of sleep? In today's frantic world, it can be difficult to pay heed to how long you sleep and how long you actually need to sleep. You might follow a decent lifestyle and might even maintain a healthy diet but if you don't get the right amount of sleep, that's all going to go waste. A new study has found that getting good sleep can actually help you cut down on unhealthy food habits. That's right, the better you sleep the less inclined you are to eat sugary and salty foods.

Sleeping for less than seven hours per night can lead to the risk of developing cardio-metabolic risk - heart disease risk and metabolic disorders. And if you sleep for the right amount of time, all of these risks can be reduced significantly. The researchers who conducted the study found that sleep extension could be associated with improved measures of insulin sensitivity and reductions in overall appetite. This meant that there was less desire to consume sweet, salty and free sugar foods. In fact, caloric intake from proteins was also said to have reduced.

"It is now apparent that poor sleep quality may be an equally important risk factor for cardio-metabolic diseases," said one researcher. The study was conducted on 138 participants who were either healthy, healthy short-sleeping, overweight short-sleeping, or pre- or hypertensive short-sleeping individuals. Well, this proves just how important sleep can be for an individual. Stay tuned for more updates.
