More often than not people quit on their diets midway because they don't know what's working for them and what isn't. But while what you eat matters, researchers have now found that monitoring your diet can also play a huge role in your weight loss journey. It won't take up a lot of your time and you can keep a check on your calorie budget and fat intake.

Although self-monitoring is seen as a displeasing task, in reality, it can be a lot more helpful than it is given credit. A group of 142 people participated in a study wherein they were asked to record their calorie and fat intake. They also recorded their portion sizes and the method of food preparation. These people met weekly for 24 weeks and consulted with a trained dietitian online.

It was found that people who logged in for an average of 23.2 minutes per day lost about 10% of their body fat. It was found that those who logged in more often were more successful and were better at self-monitoring their diet. The researchers also said that rather than the details of the log, it was the act of self-monitoring that brought about a better success rate in losing weight. The researchers now hope that people can use this method to set better weight loss targets for themselves and accomplish them.
