A new study has now found that persistent stress can result in a loss of vision. The study which is published in the EPMA Journal is based on research from hundreds of published analytical journals and clinical reports. “Continuous stress and elevated cortisol levels negatively impact the eye and brain due to autonomic nervous system (sympathetic) imbalance and vascular deregulation,” said the lead author.

The study also further recommends that those who suffer from stress should seek stress-reduction treatments and psychological counseling to help stop their eyes from losing their vision. Therapies like brain stimulation, relaxation response, vision restoration, anxiety management and social support counteract stress should also be introduced to the patients.

These forms of therapy have in the past proven successful in increasing blood flow to the eye, thereby opening the window of opportunity for vision restoration. Relaxation techniques such as meditation, autogenic training, stress management training and psychotherapy were also recommended by them.
