It is very important to take good care of your skin. Did you know that your skin regenerates itself every 27 days? You need to make sure these dead skin cells do not remain on your skin for long. It can lead to clogged pores, hair fall and breakouts if you do not slough off the dead skin cells. This is why exfoliation is important. The exfoliation process is different for different parts of your body. You cannot use a pumice stone on your face and you will want a grittier scrub for thicker skin like on your feet. So we have got you some tips for exfoliating your skin.

Scalp
Use a mild shampoo and really work it into your scalp. Massage your scalp in circular motions until you have covered your entire scalp. This will remove dead skin flakes; promote blood circulation to the scalp, stimulate the hair follicles and prevent dandruff. This will help reduce hair fall. You need:
2 tbsp. brown sugar
2 tbsp. finely ground oatmeal
2 tbsp. hair conditioner
Combine the above ingredients until thoroughly mixed. Shampoo your hair with a mild shampoo and remove all the build-up, dirt and oil. Take the scrub and work it into your scalp, gently massaging using circular motions. Rinse thoroughly.

Face
Once or twice a week use a facial scrub to gently lift away the dead and dull skin on your face, revealing the fresh, healthy skin underneath. This also helps promote blood circulation to the skin and unclogs pores. It is very important to keep your pores clear as blocked pores are the number one cause of pimples and breakouts. You need:
1 tbsp. coconut oil
2 tbsp. sugar
Combine the above ingredients and mix until you have a smooth mixture. Cleanse face and take the scrub and using gentle circular motions, massage your entire face for one minute. This is a good scrub to use when you do not have time to scour for a lot of ingredients. This can be pre-mixed and stored for up to three months in the fridge.

Lips
Use a gentle lip scrub that gently exfoliates the lips, while soothing the delicate skin that lies underneath. Here is a ‘minty’ lip scrub that you can make at home:
You need:
2 tbsp. sugar
1 tsp. honey
1 tsp. olive oil
1 drop peppermint oil
Combine all ingredients until they are mixed evenly. You can store this in a glass jar in the fridge for four to six weeks. When you want to use the scrub, dip a cloth in warm water and hold it against your lips for five minutes (or you could do it just after brushing your teeth or after your shower) and apply the scrub thickly over your lips. Let it sit for five more minutes. Now gently scrub away the dry skin from your lips using circular motions. Rinse with warm water.

Body
Use body scrubs, an exfoliating soap bar or an exfoliating body washes to gently slough off the dead skin cells from your body. These products act as both a body wash and a skin exfoliating agent. The skin is tougher on your body when compared to your face, and does not clog easily, but a thorough body exfoliation will give your healthy, glowing skin.
You need:
¼ cup ground coffee (you could use the leftover coffee grounds after you have made your morning cuppa)
¼ cup sugar
2 tbsp. olive oil or coconut oil (both extra virgin)
4 vitamin E capsules
Break open the vitamin E capsules and extract the liquid out of them. Combine the above ingredients with the vitamin E extract until they form a smooth paste. When you shower, cleanse your skin as usual and take this scrub, and gently massage it in circular motions, making sure you cover all parts of your body. Rinse with lukewarm water.

Feet
The skin on the feet is most prone to dryness and hardening. So keep your feet looking healthy by using a foot scrub regularly. Gently massage the dry areas or the spots which have become a little hard with a grainy scrub and follow it up with a rich moisturiser. An excellent idea is to apply the moisturiser overnight and wear thin socks to bed, so the moisturiser really soaks into the skin. Here is a simple scrub you can make at home:
You need:
2 cups brown sugar
½ cup coconut oil (or more, if you think your paste is too thick)
2-3 drops of peppermint oil
Combine the above ingredients until the mix evenly. Rub the mixture onto your feet massaging gently and let it sit for a few minutes. Rinse with warm water. This scrub will take care of the dry skin on your feet and leave them smelling minty fresh!
