We know just how bad pollution can be for our skin. Dirt, dust, smoke and many other pollutants can clog our skin causing it to break out. “Air pollution is the most common of all that affects the skin,” said a leading doctor. “This can also lead to premature ageing of the skin, and dull and fatigued skin," she continued. “Various air pollutants such as ultraviolet radiation, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds, oxides, particulate matter, ozone and cigarette smoke affect the skin as it is the outermost barrier," she added.

“Air pollutants damage the skin by inducing oxidative stress. Even though human skin acts as a biological shield, prolonged or repetitive exposure to high levels of these pollutants may have profound negative effects on the skin,” she added. “The presence of pollution is constant and small enough to enter the skin, leading to increased sensitisation and ageing,” she continued.

Prevention is always better than cure so make sure that you shield your skin from all such kinds of pollution. Maintain a balanced lifestyle and follow a good skincare regimen. Make sure to cleanse your skin daily in the morning and evening to remove any debris of pollutants. Exfoliate your skin and moisturise to create a protective barrier. Also use SPF religiously when you step out of the house. A few such things can go a long way when it comes to protecting your skin.
