Cellulite, that lumpy, dimpled flesh that pops up on thighs, hips, buttocks, and stomach can be difficult to get rid of. Body fat, skin thickness and strength of connective fibres are some of the determining factors that indicated whether you will get cellulite or not.

What is it? "Within the dermis(the outermost layer of skin) is a network of connective tissue that looks like honeycomb. As fat cells increase in size, the connective tissue within this layer become weakened and fat bulges through, giving the skin a dimpled appearance," Len Kravitz, Ph.D., an exercise science researcher at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, told a news portal.

From topical creams to laser-assisted procedures, the treament options to get rid of this pesky issue are plenty. The sad news is you can't get rid of it completely no matter what you try, according to the experts. "You cannot cure it," Neil Sadick, M.D., a clinical professor of dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, told a news portal. Adding, "But you can help make it look significantly better."

Here are a few ways to temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite:

1. Exercise: Specific workout routines can help tone your body."Women need to start lifting weights two to three times a week. I'm a big proponent of this," Patricia Farris, M.D., a dermatologist in New Orleans, told a news portal. Molly Wanner, M.D., an instructor in dermatology at Harvard Medical School told a news portal: "Resistance exercise acts like fillers for your skin. If your muscles are more defined, your skin will look smoother."

2. Strengthen your skin: You could try using topical treatments as it could help to build collagen in the skin. Opt for Retin-A or creams with retinol and vitamin C.

3. Quit smoking: Researchers have found smoking can weaken the production of collagen. This causes your cellulite to be more visible. The findings were published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.

4. Be wary of lipo: While there are many doctors who still suggest giving lipo a go, the experts warn against it. This is because it is not an effective way to get rid of cellulite and it could make your skin look more dimpled.

5. Cellulite treatment options: Currently, researchers fromStony Brook University have developed a collagenase injection, which is a nonsurgical procedure that could make the skin more smooth. Participants treated with this injection in clinical trials saw a 76 per cent reduction in the appearance of cellulite. However, the treatment is not yet available and still needs to get FDA approval.
