If you're planning on gifting a loved one an animal this holiday season, we suggest you stop and reconsider your decision. Gifting someone an animal can prove to become a big task for them. Having a pet can completely change someone's lifestyle, so unless that person is ready to do that, giving them a pet will be bad for both them and the animal. "Animals do not belong underneath a Christmas tree," says a spokesperson. "They are family members whose adoption needs thorough consideration."

Just like with a child, a pet also needs constant attention and there will be certain costs associated with it. Costs like food, medicine, grooming, training and all need to be kept in mind. And these costs can also exceed if the animal falls sick and needs surgery. Many countries have now stopped animal adoptions during the holidays so as to stop reckless adoptions that usually lead to the animal being abandoned or returned.

What's more is that children often lose interest in their pets. And adults are often too busy to walk the dog or feed the cat or clean the litter box. And this ultimately becomes a big issue. Moreover one also needs to keep in mind that animals require certain space to move about. So unless you have a big home or at least an accomodating one, it's best not to adopt a pet. Well, whatever you decide to do, remember to do so responsibly. And remember pets are family, not gifts.
