It's no secret that eating high-fat food can be bad for your health and your weight but consuming these foods when you're stressed can have even more adverse reactions, a new study has found. If you eat high-fat food when you're stressed, you'll put on more kilos. When a study was conducted on mice it was found that mice who were fed high-fat food when stressed put on a lot more weight than mice who were fed the same diet when they were not stressed.

“This study indicates that we have to be much more conscious about what we’re eating when we’re stressed, to avoid a faster development of obesity,” said a professor. The researchers found that while some people tend to reduce their consumption of food when they're under stress, others tend to eat a lot more when they're under stress. The researchers then tried to understand what was causing this stress eating. It was found that when faced with stress, the insulin levels in the bodies of these mice increased slightly. But when it was combined with stress eating, the insulin levels increased tenfold.

“We were surprised that insulin had such a significant impact on the amygdala,” the professor said. “It’s becoming more and more clear that insulin doesn’t only impact peripheral regions of the body but that it regulates functions in the brain. We’re hoping to explore these effects further in future,” he concluded.
