Natural remedies may be useful to treat hair and skin issues, but using a DIY sunscreen can be harmful. Skin experts say to avoid using this type of product at all costs.

DIY sunscreens tend to contain essential oils that some believe have SPF properties. They also tend to include titanium oxide or zinc oxide, which has been found to protect against the sun's harmful rays. However, mixing up all these ingredients in your own DIY blend doesn't make it safe to use.

“Manufacturing a sunscreen is not a simple task," Megan Feely, a board-certified dermatologist in New Jersey and New York City who serves as a clinical instructor in Mount Sinai’s Department of Dermatology, told a news portal.

Adding, "Companies have to demonstrate that their products are stable and efficacious in providing you with broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays. It may take years of research and development to deliver a sunscreen that will protect you and your family from developing skin cancer.”

Therefore it is important to make sure you use the right type of protection for your skin. Sunscreen is an essential product to use, especially on a hot day. Experts urge people to re-apply it every three hours. Invest in a good product that won't cause your skin further damage, but one that will offer it protection.

Do your research and find a product that is right for you. However, stay clear of homemade sunscreens.
